Pat Cummins Set to Play a Key Part in the Ashes

Australian cricket captain

Pat Cummins has taken over 300 dismissals in 71 Test matches with an average of 22.10.

Australia's chair of selectors Bailey has declared that captain Pat Cummins will have a crucial role in the forthcoming Ashes series.

There were concerns that the veteran bowler might sit out due to a persistent back stress problem that remained unresolved.

Previous updates from the squad suggested no final decision had been made regarding his involvement, with the Test matches scheduled to begin on the 21st of November in Perth.

He revealed that his recovery is on track and felt positive about his chances of being involved.

"It's clear that the window is narrowing and there are permutations around that, not only the physical problem, but other factors as well," the selector added.

"It's positive. We firmly believe that he will feature a key capacity. Ideally from the opening match. If not, we'll reassess."

Past Concerns

Cummins was ruled out the white-ball matches against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals in the previous weeks after examinations confirmed a lower back issue.

Previous incidents include of back injuries, with recurrences in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 causing him to miss multiple domestic campaigns in a short span.

He emphasized he would be proactive in his approach in his recovery plan to ensure his availability for the Ashes.

Bailey noted that there was no confirmation if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his recovery but acknowledged it was "becoming urgent" for him to recover fully for the opener.

Contingency Plans

Should Cummins not be fit, ex-skipper Smith will lead the side.

The talented all-rounder was withdrawn recently from Australia's squad for their one-day international series against the subcontinent side as a precautionary measure because of discomfort in his torso.

Bailey described it as a "minor" injury and mentioned that Green will play in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "in a good place to be ready to bowl."

"We put so much time has gone into building out the plan for him to take part for the first Test as an batting and bowling option," the selector detailed.

"He was only going to play the starting games in any case. The way he swings the willow in shorter formats, should it hinder progress for 24 more hours, we opted to take a cautious route."
