Space Traveler Reveals Mental Health Struggle After Wave of Online Abuse After Historic Trip
A pioneering space traveler has opened up regarding her emotional downturn after enduring a “tsunami of harassment” in the aftermath of a pioneering women-only spaceflight.
The 34-year-old activist – recognized as a researcher and activist – was part of the brief journey to space in the spring, which also included well-known figures.
The mission was widely scrutinized by some, who challenged its value and environmental footprint.
Reflecting on the situation, the astronaut, who was celebrated as the pioneer for her community, stated the negative reaction overshadowed her achievement under an landslide of gendered hatred.
“I said the emotional pain might endure for years,” she recounted in a online statement, referring to a phone call from a fellow crew member in the aftermath of the flight.
She described the news reports and online discourse as an barrage beyond typical human coping.
“I did not leave Texas for a week, unable to get out of bed,” she wrote. “Even a month on, a phone call ended with me hanging up, weeping uncontrollably.”
Overshadowed by Sexism
Ms. Nguyen, who has focused her career on gynecological science and performed experiments during the flight, said all her lifelong efforts – including her scientific research and astronaut training to the symbolic importance of her roots – was overshadowed under the deluge of sexist vitriol.
She is widely recognized for her pioneering work fighting for justice for sexual assault survivors.
Her own aspiration for spaceflight was deferred after an attack during her time as a student, leading to a protracted legal battle.
A Path to Recovery
Now, eight months after reaching space, she reports that the heaviest sorrow is beginning to clear, and she expressed gratitude the supporters whose support helped save her. “You all saved me,” she wrote.
She noted that amid the criticism, important benefits had emerged from the flight, including spotlight on her women's health research and new advocacy opportunities.
The Historic Journey
The fully automated New Shepard rocket departed its launch site in April, carrying the all-female team on a brief suborbital flight that exceeded the Kármán line of space.
The group of women also included accomplished professionals from multiple disciplines.
